How to Find the Right Service to Start as a Freelancer

Starting as a freelancer can be exciting... and also confusing.

The first question is usually: What can I offer as a service?

Here's an exercise based on the IKIGAI Method, which can help answer this question. We ourselves used it at the beginning of our journey as freelancers.

1. What do you like to do?

Make a quick list, without filters.

Examples:

  • Cooking
  • Programming
  • Making videos
  • Organizing events

2. What do you know how to do well?

Choose from the previous list what you have real competence or experience in. If necessary, ask for feedback from those who have already seen your work.

3. What can you be paid for?

Research:

  • Are there people making money from this?
  • What type of clients pay? Companies? End consumers?

4. What does the market really need?

Read comments on social media.

Check requests in Facebook groups.

Listen to your friends' complaints.

What problems remain unsolved?

(Bonus) What do you do in service of others?

Think about activities you already do to help someone and not just for recreation. This helps identify a more sustainable service.

Real example: In our case, we knew how to program and design. We enjoyed it, there was demand... and we enjoyed solving real problems for other people. That's how the Atelier was born.

Try this exercise and look for an intersection between talent, pleasure, and utility. There's your first service.
