Pricing well is part of your job

Many freelancers charge too little for fear of losing clients. But setting your prices correctly is essential for having a viable and healthy business.

Below we list 3 strategies that will help you set sustainable prices.

1. Price based on real cost and time

  • Calculate what you need to live
  • Add costs for taxes, tools, marketing, etc.
  • Apply a multiplier (e.g., x3) to ensure profit and cover prospecting time

This is your minimum baseline. Avoid working on budgets below this line.

2. Price based on value created

When the impact of your work is high, the price can go beyond the time invested.

Example: A logo for a national brand can be worth hundreds (or thousands) of euros.

This strategy requires good communication with the client and clarity about the impact.

3. Market alignment (including international)

If you provide digital services, you can sell to clients outside Portugal.

Adapt your prices to the target market.

A high price here might be perfectly reasonable in other countries.

Bonus: Talk to an accountant

Before finalizing your prices, understand the impact of tax burden.

Consulting a good accountant will help you choose the right regime, predict taxes and deduct expenses efficiently.
